This white paper establishes the reasons why Interstate 95 (I-95) is considered one of the most dangerous highways in the United States, and includes a detailed assessment of fatality data.
Methodology
By analyzing data from authoritative sources such as The Associated Press, the U.S. Department of Transportation, and The Eastern Transportation Coalition, we assembled substantive background information. This includes fatality data (with a focus on the disproportionately dangerous southern stretches of the I-95), plus the reasons for fatalities, including infrastructure issues, but in particular, how driver behavior causes so many accidents and fatalities.
Objective
The ultimate objective of the research is to emphasize the fact that driver behavior, including drunk driving, distracted driving, and speeding, is the consistent cause of the hundreds of deaths that occur on I-95 each year. By drawing substantive attention to this fact, we hope to improve awareness regarding the primary I-95 danger factors and provide key information that could prove invaluable to policymakers seeking to improve safety along I-95.
