The Schiller Kessler Group is proud to announce Parker Shubin as the recipient of the 2026 Healing Journey Scholarship. Parker’s inspiring story of perseverance, strength, and compassion exemplifies all the values that our Florida personal injury lawyers want to honor with this scholarship.
As a brain tumor survivor who has faced immense challenges from an early age, Parker has turned his hardships into a driving force to help others by pursuing a career in pediatric nursing.
Parker’s Journey to Overcoming Adversity
At just five years old, Parker was diagnosed with a pilocytic astrocytoma brain tumor, forever changing the course of his life. Over the years, he has undergone 19 surgeries, including 14 brain surgeries; endured two years of chemotherapy; and received countless MRIs and other treatments.
Despite these daunting challenges, Parker has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his education and his aspirations. “Being in and out of hospitals didn’t break me; it inspired me,” Parker wrote in his scholarship essay.
Parker’s experiences as a patient not only taught him resilience but also sparked his passion for helping others. His dream is to become a pediatric nurse and provide the same level of care and compassion that he received during his medical journey.
More people choose The Schiller Kessler Group because they know that we're a cut above other personal injury law firms.

Care Extender Volunteer at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center
Parker’s dedication to serving others is evident in his extensive volunteer work and leadership roles. As a Care Extender, Parker worked directly with patients and nurses in the neurology and neurosurgery departments.
He assisted with tasks like answering calls, providing patients with comfort items, and ensuring they felt heard and supported during their hospital stays.
One particularly meaningful experience for Parker was connecting with patients who shared similar conditions to his own. For example, when he met a fellow stroke survivor and shared his own experience with them, he was able to give the patient a sense of reassurance and hope.
He also encountered a patient who had just received a VP shunt, a procedure Parker has undergone twice. These moments of connection reaffirmed his desire to pursue nursing. “Sometimes, just being there is enough,” Parker recalled a mentor telling him during the course of his volunteer work.
Advocacy Through Community Organizations
Parker has also been an active member of the American Cancer Society on Campus and Synapse at UCLA. Through these organizations, he has raised funds for cancer research, supported patients, and built relationships with fellow survivors.
His efforts have included:
- Raising money for cancer research through the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
- Writing and hand-delivering cards to cancer patients at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
- Serving as a “buddy” for a brain injury survivor through Synapse, where he provided weekly emotional support and connection.
Parker’s leadership in these organizations showcases his dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of others.
How the Healing Journey Scholarship Will Help
The Schiller Kessler Group created the Healing Journey Scholarship to support individuals who have faced adversity and are determined to make a difference in the lives of others. For Parker, this scholarship will alleviate the financial stress of nursing school and allow him to focus entirely on his demanding studies.
“This scholarship will greatly impact my life and academic career,” Parker said. “I’ve been on the receiving end of world-class care, and now I want to give that same level of care to others. I don’t want to be defined by my past, but I do want to be driven by it.”
Currently completing his prerequisites at Moorpark College, Parker has applied to three Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs in California. His ultimate goal is to work in pediatrics, ideally at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where he has been a patient for the past 15 years.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Nurses
Parker credits his father as his biggest inspiration. Despite facing his own medical challenges, including a diagnosis of transverse myelitis, he has demonstrated resilience and determination in both his personal and professional life.
His influence, combined with Parker’s own experiences, has shaped his vision of the type of nurse he wants to become: someone who brings compassion, understanding, and hope to every patient.
“I want to be the nurse who walks into a pediatric patient’s room and says, ‘I’ve been there. You can do this,’” Parker said. His desire to provide comfort and reassurance to children and families facing uncertainty reflects the core values of The Schiller Kessler Group: compassion, integrity, and a commitment to helping those in need.
